How often do we think about our feet? How many everyday idioms are there which contain the word “foot” or “feet”?……we take our feet for granted. We rely upon our feet to support our body weight, to stabilise and support us throughout our lives; they are the only part of our body maintaining permanent contact with the Earth’s energy beneath us and each contain more than 7,000 nerve endings.
Reflexology is an ancient therapy developed over thousands of years in both Western and Eastern cultures based on the premise that every part of our body is reflected by and connected to a specific area on our feet – a blueprint of the body’s structure and organs. By massaging or applying pressure to particular areas, the body is better able to heal itself and achieve natural balance and equilibrium both physically and emotionally by stimulating nerve function, increasing energy, and boosting circulation, inducing a state of relaxation and eliminating toxins in certain areas.
The aim of any holistic therapy is to “balance” and help the body maintain and balance itself naturally in its constant striving to achieve an equilibrium known as homeostasis. Reflexology does not claim to “cure” in the everyday sense of the word, or “diagnose”. However, it is a recognised complementary therapy and as such can reveal imbalances in specific areas which may be helpful in seeking a medical diagnosis, or help in the body’s natural recovery from injury or surgery, if need be in conjunction with your medical practitioner.
Above all, reflexology stimulates the parasympathetic “rest – and – digest ” part of our autonomous nervous system. It helps with the relief of stress and anxiety which are the byproducts of, and often a contribution to the onset of, many common ailments, and combats the sympathetic “fight or flight” mechanism of our nervous system which remains on constant alert in a stressful modern environment.
Therefore, reflexology can either just be a relaxing luxury, a means of dealing with the debilitating phenomenon of modern day stress, or alleviating the symptoms of an existing ailment in a totally drug free manner. Its function is to assist the body in its constant battle to maintain its equilibrium but you do not HAVE to be ill or feel something is wrong with you to thoroughly enjoy it!
